Fiction Guidelines
Fat Dog Books reviews previously unpublished manuscripts of between 60k-120k words, favoring stories that emphasize plot progression and character development rather than a specific writing style or genre, or following current trends. Certainly the author’s ability to craft exhilarating and well-constructed sentences is a consideration, but if the steak has no sizzle then the prose will not matter.
We prefer literary or mainstream fiction over genre fiction, however if your story is captivating and the characters are vivid and fascinating, we will certainly consider genre manuscripts. No matter how morbid or disturbing the plot, we give special consideration to those stories that illuminate the human spirit and despite tragic circumstances, ultimately leave the reader with a positive and uplifting message.
Fat Dog Books will also consider manuscripts aimed at the middle grades and young adult readers, mainstream stories that may involve sports, young love/friendship or coming of age issues. We do not accept submissions for poetry. And please, no children’s or picture books. Your target audience should be 13 years or older.
What we crave above all else is a good, compelling story exceptionally well told, with colorful characters that we’ll fondly remember long after turning the last page. It is exactly what we – as readers – hope for when we begin a new story and as publishers it is what we strive to bring our community of readers.
